I've been looking at this site to find out whether to bother with one of these companies or if I'll just end up losing my money. I see that asking about particular companies on here seems to go badly sometimes for various reasons, so I just thought I'd ask for signs of what to look for and what to avoid when I look at the websites for these on-line companies. Anybody have any thoughts?

Review my thread-posting history and you'll quickly learn about the red flags. Pay particular attention to my thread titles that reference specific sites.
As always, don't trust anyone's "word," even mine. I prefer that people review the evidence that I post and come to their own conclusions, rather than simply trusting me at face value.

the only way to be sure is through experience. even sites that look bad are sometimes good, because this is a very stripey industry to begin with-- vice versa with sites that look good-- it's all about finding a writer you like and sticking with them. roll the dice. and don't trust WB's advice-- in case it's not obvious, they're about as far from objective empiricism as it gets.

rustyironchains: WB is an addled crusader; they are completely full of baseball, apple pie, and BS. don't trust a word they write. the only way to be sure is through experience. even sites that look bad are sometimes good, because this is a very stripey industry to begin with-- vice versa with sites that look good-- it's all about finding a writer you like and sticking with them. roll the dice. Dbryant, as you will soon come to realize, RustyWriter is an avid fraudster. In fact, he is an admitted CRIMINAL:
rustyironchains: a couple of years ago, I worked for a company in Manhattan. I got paid to make false promises. customers came into the office, and I took their money. when they left, I didn't help them, and I got paid anyway. these people paid for absolutely nothing. it was fun for a while, despite bad karma and high stress. it was a scam. SOURCE: Does this site do oxymoron(ism) ?
As I stated previously, trust only the evidence and ignore the criminal mouthpieces of the fraudulent sites, like RustyWriter, whose sole purpose in this forum is to convince people like you to fall victim to his employer's scam and line his dirty pockets.

WB's misuse of these words "crime," "fraud," and "scam," is perhaps the most serious red flag you should look out for.

Well, thanks for the responses. Guess I'll keep looking. Does anyone know what it means if a website's address ends in .us instead of .com or .org or something? Is that a bad sign? I saw something saying it means its in the USA but does that matter for an online company?

Domain extensions mean nothing, except in the case of domains ending in .edu, .gov, and a few others that are not available for public registration.
It is important to remember that many foreign-operated site owners register .us domain names because they think that they can fool American customers into believing that their company is located in the United States.

How about those websites that do not have contact telephone numbers? Those that only have one e-mail address?

Kisii1941: How about those websites that do not have contact telephone numbers? Those that only have one e-mail address? There's nothing wrong with not displaying a phone number. In fact, most companies that display a phone number either don't answer the line or employ a third-party call center manned by people who can barely speak English.
