Anyone here ever thought of starting their own writing services? I have - just not sure how to land customers.

C'mon...I wasn't gonna post it here...just excited about launching it. I do have a question though - how do I give potential customers confidence that I am authentic and trustworthy? Other than word of mouth? I don't know what the writing services do out there - since I've only been on two of them as a writer and not as a customer.

I don't mean to burst your bubble, but it takes many years and insane money to build a reputation and achieve the type of SEO that enables you to realistically compete. That is why almost all writers who try to start their own sites end up returning to freelancing.

Actually, WritersBeware - I'm not sure I understand what you mean by returning to freelancing? If you are freelancing - how do you attract customers? Do you mean the writers return to working for one of the online companies, instead?
I'd be interested in hearing some specific facts on companies that have taken years and insane amounts of money to build a reputation. I'm not sure there is a company out there right now that has a good reputation and has been out there for years.
I've spent a good deal of my "day" job working on SEO - it doesn't need money...it just takes perseverance - and more importantly - have a product that customers want or need. The money comes in when you don't know how to apply the theories of SEO to your own website and you have to pay someone else who has already spent a good deal of their "day" job learning how to do it.

The number one goal of any company is to appear or return in the first 10 hits of a search engine. Especially, big engines like google and yahoo. When there are hundreds and thousands of competive websites - how do you bubble to the top? Studies have shown that most people will not go beyond the first page of hits returned. For example, I'm working on a webpage campaign for a judge election. Lets say you are a prospective voter and want to know who are running for the position of judge in the county. When you put the key words Ozaukee County Judge at google.com my web page might appear ahead of the other campaigners or it might not appear at all on the first page of hit returns. If mine appears first - I will likely gain that potential voters attention.
In order to get your site to appear at the top of the hits - you use a process called Search Engine Optimization. In other words, what do you have to do to get the search engine to find your site first? In the old days, it was as simple as placing a few key tag words in the background of the webpage and submitting your site to the search engine. Now - there is more to it than that. For example, WritersBeware talks about going to backlinks and complaining about the various fraudulent essay sites. Those backlinks are simply other pages that link to 'your' website. The more links to your pages the better. Like a popularity contest. But it's still more than that - the websites backlinking should also rank high in the search engines - "how many individual hits do they get a day" and "how many websites link back to their website", that sort of thing. There are also 'search' file helpers you can place on your website to help the search engines find you. For example, google, yahoo and msn all will create a unique file for you to place on your website. Once you've placed it there - they will 'verify' your site. Another way, is to create a sitemap file. Then upload the file to search engines. Probably, though...the best way to get hits is to simply use Google Adwords or the Yahoo equivalent. How many times have you searched for something and saw a number of sites pop up on the side - that are exactly what you are looking for? Adwords! :-)
I don't know if essayscam.org used any type of SEO but I did find it right away. I'm guessing it bubbled up to the top because there are unfortunately not enough sites out there to compete with the message of this board. Wish there were!

impy-
I'm new to this site, but not to this messy writing game, and would definitely be interested in joining/helping your company. I have some ideas for attracting business, plus we could keep doing what we're doing until things pick up, I figure.

I've had experiences as an academic writer.. I've also been thinking about starting my own writing service. Does anybody know where to get clients without having my own website?

That's a good question, AP. I tried craigslist.org - but posting is limited to 1 location - no responses. Another thought I had was going to the schools and posting on bulletin boards - too much leg work and gas.

Ezinearticles is a good place to get targeted visitor. For one of my web site it is attracting 5/10 targeted visitors every day for few articles I posted there and I have seen those visitors actually stay in the site for longer time. Many essay companies post articles there to attract customers. Also Articlebase is another good place.
Thanks Dave

You'll find plenty of them on google.
Some sites ask for previously written papers while others may want you to write on a particular topic.
